Antique Whittall Anglo Persian Rug
M. J. Whittall Associates was started by the Whittall family in the early 1880s and closed in 1956. They produced fine quality machine made rugs with wool pile. A 9' x 12' room size rug in the (Bird of Paradise) pattern. This rug is in very good condition, you don't see them in this kind of condition anymore. I live 10 miles from the main factory where they manufactured these rugs. I have seen a few over the years. This rug was manufactured in 1947 Which explains why it is in such great condition. These rugs have a unique quality to them. They change colors as light is reflected on the rug. Look at my photos, as I moved the camera shots, the rug changes colors. From light to dark. The Anglo Persian was their finest weave. The face is wool and pile is nice. No holes or tears and rug is still nice and flexible-not brittle. This is straight from an estate and could use a vacuuming and maybe a shampoo but I noticed no smell or stains. I could not find any moth damage, a few faint lines in the carpet where they sewed the panels together is very common but you really have to look for them. The fringe is in very good shape. You seldom see a carpet that does not have fringe issues. No wear marks from traffic patterns etc. A very high quality carpet with great colors.
